Joe Webster, aka EnuF studied with renowned artist Carole Vincent. He earned his foundation degree in Art & Design at Falmouth College of Arts and received a BA Hons degree in Contemporary Arts at Nottingham Trent University in 2002 before deepening his studies with a Postgraduate Certificate in Art from Exeter University.
He paints en plein air using acrylics and water-soluble materials that work in direct dialogue with water in the environment, capturing the impact of weather conditions on the natural landscape. He incorporates techniques borrowed from Street Art, using permanent markers and spray paint to layer and superimpose graffiti into his vigorous brushstrokes.
This expressive and complex technique evokes Gustav Klimt’s use of patterns and a daubing technique, while recalling the compositional plein-air sketches of the British Romantic artist John Constable. He blends in this way visual references to earlier styles with the contemporary, juxtaposing traditional techniques with dynamic graffiti.
Joe has exhibited extensively in the UK, in Portugal with Galeria Corté Real and in Australia with JahRoc Galleries. In 2016, he received the South West Academy’s Whitespace Award and in 2018 he published his first monograph Living Canvas. His artworks are held in private collections in the UK, Spain, Portugal, France, Sweden, Germany, Czech Republic, the Philippines, Malaysia, Australia, Brazil, Canada and the USA.
