Ruth Gillbanks studied sculpture at Bristol where she gained a BA (Hons) but continued her art through her love for painting. As Head of Faculty for Visual Arts in a Bristol secondary school, she helped both her student and herself find their talent and now uses it as a professional artist.
Now living beside the Mendips but enjoying surfing and horse riding in Cornwall, plein air painting has become her passion. The spontaneity of painting outdoors brings a verve and excitement to her work and she does it whenever possible on her trips there.
The beauty of the rural landscape speaks to Ruth’s soul and drawing on her years of observing, she aims for her artwork to be an extension of her emotional responses to those surroundings. Whether using charcoal, watercolours, acrylics, inks or oils, she uses them all to capture the dynamic spirit of the landscape.
