Beach Life 2
Portscatho, or “Portscatha” as it was once known, means harbour or
cove (porth) with large rowing boats (scathow). People have been
launching boats from here since medieval times and the harbour was
developed in the boom years of pilchard fishing. Nowadays, it is tourism
that dominates the village economy, though pots and nets still keep
boats busy. The fishermans’ lives are interrupted by the visitors in
the warmer months and yet they calmly accommodate the challenge,
patiently working around the swimmers, kayakers and quay jumpers. This
picture is a reminder of the working life of the village, and this view
probably hasn’t changed much for centuries. Using the cyanotype
process (one of the earliest forms of photographic imaging using
sunlight) seemed appropriate to capture this sense of history.

Location: Portscatho Harbour, Cornwall
