Some of the best parts of the holiday period we’ve just had are family. Conversely, though, for many of us, family are also the hardest part. Spending time with people with whom we share many bonds, but also many bruises, can be hard.
As we enter a New Year, I have a suggestion for those who might like a New Year’s resolution. It’s what I’m calling the 3 Breath Method.
When we feel aggrieved, if you’re anything like me and want to react immediately, then try the following first in 2026: take a deep breath in over a 3-4 seconds, then slowly release it over the same period. Do this three times, then decide your response.
This action will not only bring down the urge to react instantly (and maybe rashly), but it will give ten to twelve seconds to consider if the situation warrants it at all and, if so, just how we might phrase our reply.
I’ve spoken here many times before about writing back to someone in anger. When aggrieved, I tend to write my reply then let it rest for a few hours (overnight, if I can) before checking if it’s exactly what I want to say. The 3 Breath Method is a momentary version of that. It allows us time to decide our action, rather than simply re-acting, whilst also giving us time to hone our response.
However you go into 2026, I do hope you find and feel more love and compassion. I know we are all both loving and compassionate, but the world could always do with more. And what better time of year to wish the best for everyone than a fresh new year? Good luck and thanks in advance for bringing a tad more light into the world and I hope the 3 Breath Method helps in some small way!
